Welcome

Greyton Neighbourhood Watch was established in November 2012.

In an effort to formalise the structure, we have registered a non-profit company: Greyton Watch NPC and opened a bank account.

Our WiFi network is provided by Lightspeed, who have also donated additional CCTV cameras, recording equipment and are providing office space for the CCTV Monitoring equipment and staff.

The village has been split into 4 areas, each with a block coordinator.

Block 1 (North) Park St to Vlei St, from the reserve to Kloof St
(John Pretorius – 084 460 4800)

Block 2 (Central) Park St to Vlei St , from Kloof St to Ds Botha and Von Solm St
(Chris van Dalen – 083 234 0437)

Block 3 (South) Von Solms St to Buitekant St, from Ds Botha/Main to the Retirement Village
(Gavin Jones – 061 537 1108)

Block 4 (West) Heuwelkroon and Bosmanskloof

PATROLS

Evening “patrols” on foot, bicycle or car – These we are encouraging on an informal basis. There are a fair number of our residents (and frequent visitors) who do an evening walkabout in the village. What we ask is that these “patrols” pay particular attention to things that look vulnerable (house doors, windows, garage doors or sheds left open. Bicycles, toys or suchlike, left outside. Valuables of any kind left visible in cars, locked or unlocked).

Visitors to Greyton are particularly targeted in the early evenings of Friday and Saturday. Often they will arrive after a long drive and not be too diligent about securing the premises, or just leave valuables in plain sight, before heading out for dinner. What we would like is that every evening patroller have their radio or cell phone with them (and the GNW Control Room phone number on a speed-dial key). If they spot something that could clearly lead to a criminal act, they need merely notify the GNW Control Room who will immediately activate the radio network and ensure an appropriate response.

Critical time “patrols”These are undertaken late at night and in the early hours of the morning when we know that the housebreakers are most active. These patrols are more formalised, usually numbering two or three people, and ideally on foot or bicycle. We strongly advocate that these patrols are done with the support of the GNW Block Coordinator who can provide radios for the patrollers to ensure that they receive proper backup from the SAPS and security companies when needed. Due to recent successes we are trying to increase these patrols, so anyone who hasn’t yet experienced the beauty of Greyton at 3:30 in the morning, please contact your Block Coordinator!!

First Responder “patrols” – We are introducing this aspect at the request of the SAPS. We are finding that when an alert goes out (an alarm activation or sighting of an intruder) GNW patrollers plus the security companies and SAPS arrive on the scene within minutes.

We urgently need a few more residents to participate as First Responders.

A few of us have been doing it over the past couple of years. It’s hugely rewarding to be part of this team, but quite exhausting if the numbers are too few.

If you are able to help, please contact the Block Coordinator for your area.

To reiterate some of the principles we have established:

  • GNW are merely the “eyes & ears” for the police and the security companies (no Rambo stuff is required or wanted)
  • Foot patrols and patrols in cars parked quietly at strategic points are most useful.
  • Patrollers should be in pairs.
  • Initially we will encourage inexperienced patrollers to join experienced patrollers.
  • All patrols must have a GNW radio (obtainable from the Control Room). The radio provides immediate contact with the Control Room, APS and SAPS (and other GNW members on stand-by).
  • Patrol times and routes are at the discretion of the patrollers.
  • Patrollers need to be registered (once off) and must check in at the Control Room for each patrol or shift.
